Hardware :: New AEBS - Separate SSIDs For G And N?

Feb 8, 2010

About a week ago, I purchased the Airport Extreme Base Station, the 2009 version with Simultaneous Dual Band, from my local Apple Store. It's doing its job quite admirably; whereas my old "G" router was only giving my iMac (one floor down and ~50 ft away) maybe 60% signal, the AEBS gives me near 100%, with no dropouts yet.

I have read elsewhere in the forums that the "G" and the "N" portions of the AEBS can be configured such that each has a separate SSID. Unfortunately, neither a regular Google search nor a MRoogle search turns up any instructions for doing this, and neither does a search of the Apple support site. Does anyone know of a site that might have this? Links, copy/paste, whatever is available is appreciated. (I'm considering an tv, and I would like it to connect only via N.) Also, is there any way to set bandwidth limits on the Guest Network? I'd like to open that up for friends who occasionally need to check something, but I don't want someone leeching all my bandwidth.

Hardware :: Upgrade AEBS To Dual Band AEBS?

Jun 22, 2009

I'm sure there is a few people on here that have made the swap - is it worth it? Is the difference in speed noticible to warrant an upgrade.

My current setup:
2.4 MBPu
Mac Mini (coming soon)
Dell Inspiron
Canon Printer
Touch
Slingbox (hardwired to AEBS)
AE (old school version)
WD 1TB external (connected to AEBS via usb)

All currently connected to a AEBS wireless.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Two Separate Time Machine Backups / Use To Create Two Separate Profiles On One New Computer

Mar 31, 2012

I have an iMac 27 (end of year 2009) I5.It has 1 TB internal and I want to replace it with a 2 TB internal. I have time machine backups on an external hard drive that has been connected via Firewire. I have another iMac (my son's)Imac 24 Intel Core 2 Duo that has it's own separate Time machine backup to it's own separate firewire connected external drive. Both machines are completely up to date with the latest version of Lion and all other necessary software updates. When the internal hardrive is replaced - I want to use my latest time machine backup to create one profile on the imac and then use my son's latest time machine back up for a second profile. The end goal being to have everything from my current set up ie: apps, documents, itunes, etc existing in one profile and everything in my son's current set up existing in the other profile. We can both be administrators for the time being as well.I should note even though we both have some of the same apps, we both also have other apps that the other does not.

My profile will be using about 900 gigs of total space. My son's profile will be using about 250 gigs of total space. This is temporary until the new iMac is released. Then I will want to transfer my profile to that leaving my son's intact on the iMac 27 I5.I realize that during the temporary period that Time Machine will be making backups of this entire two profile setup, which I am now understanding as I write this will create a new issue for me when I want to transfer only my profile to the new computer as well. But one bridge to cross at a time, I guess.I need to do this because we must bring his current computer to my father - as his iMac G5 is inoperable. We have been doing this round robin hand me down in our family since IMac DV special edition :-)

Info:
iMac (27-inch Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Hardware :: Can I Synch Two Separate ITunes On Two Separate PC's To A Single Airport Express?

If I purchase an Airport Express, is it possible that my wife and I can both play music from our separate computers to the one Airport Express Base Station (obviously not at the same time)?

OS X :: Back Up AEBS HDD To Another AEBS HDD?

Can this be done? I've got the full version of Super Duper which will let me back up local drives to any network drive but I can't seem to get it to back to to a network drive to a network drive.

OS X :: Separate IP For Separate User?

Dec 5, 2009

hat I'm doing is a little crazy, but I'm doing it partly just for the fun of making it work. I'm trying to make my Intel so my PPC user can connect to my user via screen sharing and play an Intel based game online with me. I have the screen sharing working and everything, but apparently the LAN doesn't work because we have the same IP.

So, my question is: Is there a way to make my other user have a different IP than my main user? I'm thinking maybe some mac address emulator may work, but I thought I'd see if anyone here knew an easier way before I got too complicated.

Hardware :: How To Know About AEBS

Jun 30, 2009

I'm thinking about getting a Airport Extreme Base Station, and have a few questions.

1) Are the Ethernet ports 10/100/1000 ?

2) Can I setup MAC based access with WEP or WPA security?

3) Does it support uPnP ?

4) Can I setup IP reservations for my other devices? iPhones, Laptops, Servers, etc..

5) Does it support Port Forwarding?

6) Can I plug in a External Drive and use it as a Time Machine backup device?

Hardware :: Can I Set AEBS On N And AE On G

Jul 19, 2009

So I've recently setup my AEBS(non dual) for N only and network utility shows it's about twice as fast(I haven't really done any tests or know how though). However now my iPhone can't access it. Now I've got a AE that I use strictly for wireless audio(I live in a one bedroom setup so no need to extend), is there a way to set that up as a G network somehow for my iPhone, and in case friends come by with non N laptops? If it helps any, the AEBS is not that far from the AE if wiring is an option.

Right now I have AEBS+MiniStack(hdd)+printer, and AE+iPod HiFi. I'd like my MacBook to be able to run off the AEBS and access my ministack, but at the same time transmit audio to my HiFi. Then I'd like my iPhone and older laptops to access my AE. I don't mind a mess of wires on the other side of my room, I just don't want anything with me on the couch but the power cord.

MacBook Air :: Using MBA With AEBS AndHDD/NAS/TM?

Oct 30, 2010

If you can't fit your media on the small SSDs do you access it wirelessly using the above? Do you lose your snappyness of the MBA if your wirelessly accessing your pictures, movies, mp3s through iphoto, VLC n iTunes?

Any negatives to this when in home network, know the obvious issue of when away and some solutions for that, with the caveats over access over internet.

I was planning on setting up 2 iphoto n iTunes albums one locally n one on the wireles attached HDD and using just favourites locally when away from the home.

Assuming this must be a common issue for all the new small capacity SSD owners coming from larger HDDs like me.

Hardware :: Using AE Or AEBS As Bridge?

Apr 10, 2009

Hi. Looking for some advice on whether to purchase an Airport Express or an AEBS for bridging Wireless-N in my apartment.

Currently I run a Mac Pro via gigabit ethernet to a D-Link DGL-4300 wireless-G router. My Powerbook is wireless-G and connects wirelessly. I also have an ipod Touch which is obviously G. I just recently purchased an AppleTV to get some HD and iTunes streaming in the bedroom, so the AppleTV is not located near the D-Link where I could connect it via ethernet.

So I need Wireless-N in order to stream content to the AppleTV. I also need to maintain a wireless-G network for both the Powerbook and the iPod Touch.

I was considering buying a new router that did simultaneous G and N but it would be an awful waste of what's otherwise a great existing G router.

So my question is, should I get an Airport Express and run it in Bridge mode to provide wireless-N connectivity to the AppleTV and any other follow-on N products I may purchase, or should I go with the AEBS which would come with a USB port for an external hard drive?

OS X :: Does AEBS Need To Be Connected To A Computer To Work

Dec 2, 2010

I currently have one router (AEBS) distributing service to over 5 machines at times. Considering buying a new router, and was wondering if this will improve the speed of the internet (also going to upgrade to 50 MB service). I wouldn't have it connected to a computer though, rather kept in my bedroom plugged in. Is this possible or does a router have to be connected to a computer at all times to distribute wifi signal? I understand setting it up initially with a computer, but does it need at all times to work?

Hardware :: Dual Band On New AEBS

Mar 3, 2009

What does the dual band do for you? I was thinking about buying a second AEBS for Wireless N access only since mixed mode slows down when a G device is connected. Does this new AEBS get around that by having all the N devices at 5ghz and all the G devices at 2.4 ghz? I guess a basic explanation is in order here.

Hardware :: Unable To Use Wireless N AEBS

Jun 16, 2009

I've got a 10/100 AEBS (pre-gigabit) wireless N AEBS.

Here's the setup in detail.

- AEBS v7.4.1 running in bridge mode for an Actiontech (Verizon Fios) wireless G router. IP address is static. The two routers are connected via ethernet cable

- Airport Express v7.3.2 acting as a wireless extender

- Early 09 Mac Mini 2.0 Ghz 4gb ram (usually on Wireless N network). IP address is static.

- late 06 MBP 2.33Ghz (usually Wireless N network)

- XP Pro PC ripping/encoding drone (Wireless G only hooked to Actiontech)

I've tried the AEBS both in 5ghz only mode and 2.4ghz mode w/channels 6/5 and I'm getting horrible throughput to my Mini. A 1.3gb file is reporting over an hour to copy and speedtest is showing my internet connection as less than 2Mb/s up 3Mb/s down whereas it's a 15/5. The kicker - when I switch over to my Wireless G network I'm seeing 20mins for the same 1.3gb file and Speedtest is close to advertised speeds.

Hardware :: Backup Of TC Or AEBS Drives?

Jul 2, 2009

I'm getting either Time Capsule 500gb + 1tb usb drive or AEBS with two 1tb usb drives.

With TC my plan was to use the internal drive as my iTunes and iPhoto share and the 1tb usb drive as Time Machine backup for my macs. Same would be with AEBS that other drive is for TM and other for shares.

The problem comes with how to backup the drive with the shares? All my music and photos would be there so it would be essential to have that drive backed up. Do either of the devices come with some kind of backup utility to backup the drive? Kind of reverse TM.

I want my photos and music to be accessible from two laptops and one mini. The Mini could be used as a backup machine for the share drive when it's on. Mini is not on 24/7.

Is there better alternative for this setup than TC and AEBS.
