The specification sheet for Apple's new line of MacBook Pro notebooks states that HDMI output is possible using an optional Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, hinting that Apple could release a first-party solution [Update: New ports support audio output].
The bullet point is included under the "Pure digital video output" section of the technical specifications for Apple's new MacBook Pro machines. It advertises the functionality as: "HDMI output using Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (optional)."
Apple does not make a first-party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, and there is no sign of one yet on the Apple store. Existing third-party options have been available since early 2009 for under $20. Such cables allow Macs to be connected to nearly any HDTV with HDMI for video output.
Apple does sell first-party Mini DisplayPort adapters that convert the output to VGA and DVI. Both items cost $29 direct from the hardware maker.
In March, AppleInsider exclusively reported that Apple has created in its internal labs a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI connector. The alleged hardware was said to include technology that would allows Macs shipping with an updated Mini DisplayPort spec to channel both video and audio through the Mini Display port to the HDMI adapter, rather than just video.
Update: ArsTechnica confirmed that the new Mini DisplayPort supports both audio and video output on the new MacBook Pros. However, Apple also reportedly said it has no plans to release its own HDMI adapter.
The Mini DisplayPort became a part of Apple's LED Cinema Display, MacBook and MacBook Pro lines in late 2008. It replaces DVI video with a much smaller port. The new 27-inch iMac, introduced last October, only supports DisplayPort input. Unlike the Mini-DVI and Micro-DVI connectors common on previous generation Apple products, the port is capable of driving resolutions up to 2560x1600, which is commonly used on 30-inch displays.
Though the Mini DisplayPort technology was originally created by Apple, in 2009 the Cupertino, Calif., company agreed to license the interface to the Video Electronics Standard Association for its own DisplayPort standard. Prior to the agreement, Apple had to license its technology itself and made the standard free, as an incentive for rapid adoption.
Last November, the Mini DisplayPort standard created by Apple was officially adopted by VESA, which is also finalizing the DisplayPort 1.2 standard, which will double the technology's bandwidth capabilities to 21.6GB/s.
Last week, a new patent application suggested Apple is creating a new proprietary cable that could simultaneously transmit both USB 3.0 and DisplayPort data through one cable. The described technology would offer more functionality and greater data transfer rates via smller cable connector form factor.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]
Coming from a portable background, and having dropped a few thousand on a Mac Pro last week, I thought I'd be able to skimp on buying a mic for Skype by using the new mic feature on Apple earphones...not so!
Bit weird, that they work on the MacBook range which already have an included mic, but not the desktops, which don't!
Just an observation... would a software update cure it?
I was trying to connect my Apple headphones, that came with my iPhone, to my computer, and they were unresponsive. I tried connecting and reconnecting it various times but none worked. I don't really know what the deal is. Audio just continues to play through the speakers, even if the headphone are in. This is the first time it ever happened.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't have an iPod. Yet. Often when I'm biking and have to carry my computer, I simply put it in my backpack and connect my headphones to the computer through the gap between the zippers. This allows me to listen to music, which is nice... right? Anyways, the problem is, or perhaps it's not a problem but entirely normal, that I can't control iTunes with the remote on the headphones.
I'm currently running Mac OS X Tiger, 10.4.11. It's a black Macbook, bought around 2006 - 2007.
My question is, is there anyway to make the remote on the headphones work with iTunes? Do I need a plugin of some sort? Skipping/pausing songs, changing volume, all that jazz. It's not a necessity, but it would definitely be preferred.
My battery for my 12" Powerbook G4 is munted and i need a new one. There are a few around for about $90AUD from 3rd party re-sellers which is less than half the $200AUD apple want for a genuine battery.
So i'm just wondering, has anyone got any recommendations about 3rd party batteries? i know it will probably vary a bit depending on where they're from, but i spose i'm just wondering if its worth the extra $100?
If I want to make a bootable clone of my boot drive onto an external FW hard drive which I can restore from if my internal boot drive becomes corrupted, do I need 3rd party software like Carbon Copy Cloner, or can I just create an image of the boot disk in Apple's Disk Utility and save that to the external FW hard drive?
Apart from incremental updating, what is the difference between these two methods in terms of being able to restore my computer to a previous state with all my applications installed? (I keep my data stored on a 2nd internal hard drive and am happy with manually backing this up to another external HD). So my reason for wanting to make a clone of my boot drive is so that I don't need to waste time re-installing all of my applications from DVD...
The Apple one looks tempting as it comes with 6 batteries and 29€ isn't too much, plus, as usual, it looks brilliant. I looked at some 3rd party chargers as well ranging from 20€ to 40€. None of them was stunning or special by any means. Cheaper ones usually came with two or four batteries and some came without batteries. I don't really need it for else than Magic Mouse, occasionally for something else too.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAnyone know of any 3rd party SSD (solid state drives) available that will fit the Air?? I was hoping to get a 32GB SSD for a good price & do the swap myself. I dont need much internal space & use my server for all my big files over 802.11n, so I cant justify paying Apple $1K just for the option of the SSD.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I just got a brand new White MB. I would like to replace the 120 GB 5400 rpm HD with a larger and perhaps faster 3rd party one. I have never done this before and I was wondering if people could warn me of any potential hazards as I pick out a new hard drive. Specifically:
- What are the physical dimensions of the HD for this computer?
- Can I put a 7200 rpm one in? Will this cause hazardous overheating? Can my computer handle it?
I have seen some great deals on 320 GB and 500 GB 7200 rpm HDs on Newegg. I just want to make sure they will work with my computer. Any specific models people can recommend?
I rarely install 3rd party programs on my Macbook Pro. However when there's something I want to try out I will. Most dont have an uninstaller. What is the best way to uninstall a program in Leopard?

View 4 Replies View RelatedJust ordered a 24" 3.06 GHz refurb from Apple with 4Gb RAM - 700 off. It clearly states on the product info page that it can take up to 8Gb RAM. I visited Crucuial, and using their Memory Wizard thingy, selecting this machine it says that 4Gb is the limit. Who's right? Also, not sure how many slots there are in this machine. If I want 8 Gb am I going to have to ditch the 2 x 2 Gb to buy 2 x 4Gb??

I have an app called Teamviewer for both my iPhone and my iMac & I want to be able to have it running in the background of my iMac all the time so I can connect to it from my iPhone anytime I want. Otherwise I have to open the program to let it get connected to the web. I'd like for it to always be on without any notification of it being on like dock or taskbar menu. Here is what it looks like when it is up and running. The little grey window in the upper right corner is semi transparent when your mouse is not on it. I do have dock dodger installed so the app icon is not docked but I want both of the windows seen to be able to be gone and it still remain connected. Is this possible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI know everyone who have macbook pro 5.4(Mid 2009, 2.53Ghz) trying 3rd party hdd(such as Segate and Western Digital Scorpio black) or SSD have a problems like 1. can't install SL or lion 2. occasional freezes every 7-8 seconds and etc. The last solution I saw on the other discussion forum was downgrading the EFI firmware from 1.7 to 1.6. Without downgrading EFI firmware to 1.6,I'm wondering if Hitachi Travelstar 5K750(5400rpm, SATA2) or 5K500.B(5400rpm, SATA2) or 7K500(7200rpm, SATA2) - any of this is going to work on my MBP 5.4. Does anyone with those Hitachi HDDs have a problem?
