New mac pro 8 processors, 16 gigs of ram.... editing HD footage off panasonic p2 cards. I have all the files logged and transfered to a g-raid drive. I've been editing for a few weeks with perfect performance but this morning I get "Unable to open project file"?

Final Cut Pro :: Unable To Open Project File On External Hard Drive?
I see other users had this same issue, but I read all the relevant posts and they haven't helped me. basically, I created and saved a project (along with all scratch disks) on an external hard drive. then, when I closed the project and re-opened it, it was "unable to open project file." however, it looks like all the project files are still on the hard drive (capture scratch, autosave vault, etc.) so seems like this should be redeemable

Final Cut / Soundtrack Pro :: Unable To Export Project - Could Not Create File
Regardless of what hard drive I specify, when I try to export my project I get a message that says: Could Not Create File. The export file could not be created. This may have occurred because there is insufficient disk space, or there might be a problem with the directory permissions. Yesterday I had no problem exporting this project. I've restarted my computer and still I get that message.

Final Cut Pro :: Unable To Start While Opening Project File / Deleted Com.applet Preferences
I am having weird problems with Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 and it's functionality with Snow Leopard.

Based on feedback I found online, I am being told to delete the com.apple.FinalCut Preferences and the /User Data folder. Still, I have to do that repeatedly. Whenever I open the Project file externally , FCP jams. Afterwards, it won't start up again.

Also, it is claiming not to recognize an DVCPro HD 1080i60 connection ; although, this is the same camera on my G5 Mac with FCP 5.1.4 and OSX Tiger

Applications :: Project File Is Missing From IMovie HD / Unable To Open Project
Alright so I was making this video that was really really really difficult to do and I got to like 3:00 of it today and I've been saving, then it just freezes and refuses to do anything. I then realise my external drive somehow turned off for a random reason, so I plugged it back in and it started working again, but then I reopened my project and I get this error

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/2497/picture3fgd.png

I click on ignore all and it's all in the trash, and what really pisses me off about this is that it took me weeks and weeks and weeks of time to do, there's no way I can redo this all over again. What can I do to get rid of the skipped message and make it all work again´┐Ż

Final Cut Pro :: Is There A Way To Export Project As An .flv File
I have begun to produce multimedia features (audio slide shows, stills combined with audio, no video yet) using FCP. I bit the bullet and bought the whole Final Cut Studio because I figured I would need many of the programs in the suite.

My first sizable client wants me to deliver the features not as QT files, but as .flv flash files. Is there a way to export my FCP project as an .flv file for this client with what I already have (all the FCP Studio apps) or do I still need to buy additional software? I have been researching this a bit and what I've come across so far are the following options:

1. buying flash and thus being able to export via compressor (but this seems like overkill considering flash is very expensive and I don't need it for anything else)

2. buy Sorenson Squeeze, but this also seems like an expensive option at $500 - 600.

3. I read somewhere on this forum that you can export to H.264 using compressor, and then simply change the suffix from .mov to .flv. Does anyone know if this really works?

Final Cut Pro :: Re Syncing Footage To Project File
I have a finished project that's completely edited. However, before pulling it into DVD software and burning a disc image, I inadvertently deleted the original video clips (the ones in the capture scratch folder). So, I have the project file with all the editing work I did, but no clips to sync to it. This footage was from digital tape, so a re-loaded one tape of footage by right-clicking on the matching clip file in FCP browser and batch capturing it again. The footage synced beautifully with the project file.

The problem is that I've got 3 other tapes to sync, and I'm getting an error message with all of them that reads like this: "Batch Capture: Timecode Error: Unable to locate the specified timecode. You may have specified a timecode with insufficient room for a pre/post roll operation." When I filmed this project, I just put the tapes in and hit record and realized later that I had not pre-rolled them. Any ideas how I can work around this and get the footage to sync with the project file so that I don't have to start from scratch and completely re-edit the whole thing?

Final Cut Pro :: Saving Project File (fcp) Fails OK?
We run FCP 6.0.6 on OSX 10.5.7. Been running it for years, and in general it's worked just great.

On the OSX clients (Mac Pro stacked with plenty of memory, and running OSX 10.5.7), we mount user and staff home directories from linux file servers (RHEL4-AS) via NFS.

When a user tries to save a FCP project into their home directory, the .fcp saves, no error is reported. But the file is 0KB and has a time stamp of Jul 8 2037. Users have lost many hours of work, so this problem must be fixed ASAP.

This problem is very sneaky, and only happens to a particular subset of our users. Our users homes are on a disk and NFS mount called /home/users. Staff use /home/staff. These NFS mounts are mounted via the OSX Directory Utility and both /home/users and /home/staff have the exact same settings. The NFS mounts are exported from the server with the exact same settings. If a user saves to their home (/home/users/testuser) the .fcp is 0KB. However, if a staff saves to that same directory /home/users/testuser, the .fcp save works just fine. Additionally, if I give testuser access to a staff directory, then that user can save just fine to any other directory. The problem only happens when testuser saves to their own home directory (/home/users/testuser). Additionally, testuser can save .fcp projects to any other location locally or any other NFS mounts just fine. No problem at all. It's only when a user saves to their own home dir, and only users that are using the /home/users mount. Staff use /home/staff, and they can save .fcp just fine.

Permissions on the server end are not the problem. I've given a problem user full r/w to their entire home (chmod -R 777 /home/users/testuser) but the 0KB save of .fcp files still happens.

This problem is ONLY in FCP. testuser can save any other documents, in any other software, just fine to their home or any where else on the NFS server (if permissions allow) or on the client. This problem only happens when testuser saves a .fcp project to /home/users/testuser.

I've looked over all the settings on the server side, searched logs, but there is absolutely no record of any problem at all on the server end. As far as the NFS server is concerned, the FCP client saved the file it was trying to save. Although the time stamp of Jul 8 2037 is odd in the least. That time stamp, I think, is analogous to the the largest 32bit integer, right? What the heck is that about?

Final Cut Pro :: QuickTime Output As Uncompressed Project File
I need to output my project file as an uncompressed 4.2.2. 10 bit SD quicktime of my 89 minute edit (using that to transfer to digibeta at an outside studio). I'm on fcstudio 2. As I'm going to take it to a transfer place where I notice the people working go blank if you mention color space, bit rate, up-convert issues...should I in advance include on my quicktime I bring them:

1. The 1.85 matte output on picture. This is a 4:3 sd dv sourced picture. Outputting the file is double the memory and I've had issues nesting to output in order to matte with my memory when I output..."out of memory" when memory seems to be there is an issue on the apple boards and seems to come up sometimes, sometimes not ..but I don't want to render my file TWICE in order to have a file with a matte on nor do I want someone else to render the file again with a matte on it.

2. Bars and tones. How many seconds minimum do I need of them anyway? And if I'm going to bother reusing this output to create an mpeg 2 file (or should I not bother and just use a quicktimes settings self contained output for the mpeg 2?) is this another reason to NOT put on the bars and tones? Must I should just be making a bunch of different outputs?

3. A countdown with tones or click. Does final cut have choices of countdowns? I don't see it in the fcp6 effects choices am I not looking in the right place? (I'll check the manual)

4. Is there a source for film fbi warning logos without being forced to go somewhere to author a dvd because they have it? Anyone have a website to get this off of?

5. Does it matter if I use the quicktime settings as is and have my settings on my project show the compressor as uncompressed 10 bit or should i just skip exporting it to quicktime settings and instead just go right to compressor?

6. If I'm going to be using another compression to transfer to mpeg2s down the road, do I need to bother including chapter markers on the output I'm using to transfer because after that goes on digibeta, the digibeta is going to be upresed to hdsr as a widescreen then downconverted back to sd as one of the formats.

Final Cut Pro :: Error Unknown File On Saving Again Project?
This has happened elsewhere in our office, but this is the first time it's happened to me. I'm working along fine, saving occasionally, then I go to save again and I get "Error: unknown file." message. Luckily I could save the project file to another drive.

I repaired permissions with Disk Utility and restarted FCP. It seems to be saving ok again. I figure since it's happened to other people in the office, on other machines that perhaps this is a common issue. Is there any way to prevent this? Or is it just one of many bugs that I'll have to deal with occasionally.

Final Cut Pro :: Exporting Project To A Quicktime File With TC Intact?
I'm sending my demo reel to a composer for scoring and I exported the final sequence to compressor for conversion to a quicktime file (MPEG-4). Turns out, the composer would prefer to have a file with the timecode stamped to it. Is there anyway I can do this?

Also, I'm a complete tech moron, so I'm not even sure if MPEG-4 is the best format. When I get into compressor and there's all of those formatting options, my brain went a little coo coo. Where's a good place to go to get an understanding of the differences?

Final Cut Pro :: Unable To Import Project Files
I just created a new project that was going to feature edited HD video clips taken from two different sources. The bulk of the footage consists of 1920 x 1080 clips (recorded at 29.97 fps) Logged and Transferred from my Canon Vixia HFS10. I wanted to add some additional clips that were shot on a Kodak Zi8 mini DV recorder at 1280 x 720 (frame rate unknown). The Zi8 belongs to a friend who used it along with the Canon on this particular shoot.

I've never attempted to mix clips from two different sources before, so I'm sure there are any number of nuances to this process I'm unfamiliar with. In short, though, when I attempt to import the Zi8 clips to the project individually I get the following message: File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. If I attempt to import the folder they reside in I get this message: Unsupported Frame Rate. Final Cut Pro does not support this frame rate or the way it is represented.

I right click and the window opens and go to send to STP audio project it ask me save or rename the clip. The clip opens in STP, I hit the play button and the volume was fine in FCP is now too low to hear in STP. It seems to play well if I send it to STP mulititrack file project. Final Cut Pro :: Audio Layback To 24fps FCP Project Changes File Length?
Have you heard of this problem and any possible workarounds? I think it's a bug in FCP.

1. FCP default sequence settings can only be 23.98, not 24.
2. Once you create a 23.98 sequence, you can change its Time Base to 24.
3. You're editing a 24 project, and you export audio to ProTools (Time Base 24).
4. When you receive the mixed audio files, you import them into your 24 sequence.
5. FCP imports the audio assuming the default framerate, which is 23.98.
6. When you then layback the imported audio into the sequence,
it's sped up by a factor of 24/23.976 = 100.1001%

Final Cut Pro :: Exporting 720x480 Project (square Pixels) To SD DVD - It Says That The File Is 640x480
I have a FCP project that with a sequence that is set to 720x480 (3:2) with square pixels and everything looks good - people look normal not squished - when playing it the timeline. When I export to Quicktime H.264 for the web, the resulting 720x480 files look great.

The problem is happening when I try to export the sequence to MPEG2 for DVD. I have tried many different settings in Compressor (4:3 & 16:9), but no matter what I do, the video looks horizontally squashed or stretched. When I open the 4:3 .m2v file in QT, it says that the file is 640x480. I tried importing this file into DVD Studio Pro and I burned a DVD. The resulting image looks horizontally squashed.

Final Cut Pro :: Project Created At 720p HDTV 23.98 - Fixing Wrong Project Settings
I'm new to FCP (Avid editor...). I inherited a problem that I need some help with. A FCP project was created at 720p HDTV 23.98. All the dailies were supplied on a hard drive, they were QT files, DV at 29.97. These files were imported and a sequence was cut. The problem is that this should have never been set up as a 24 frame project or a HD project, but here I am with a 24 HD sequence.

So far I've exported the sequence as a self contained DV, 29.97 movie and re-imported it into a DV, 29.97 project. Now that's good, and will print to tape on my DV deck. But the image is now smaller and stretched, and it's an odd stretch. I have to enlarge the x coordinate to 133% and the y coordinate to about 125% and I have no reference to compare it to because I'm working in 16x9. When I do this, I am seeing a degradation in image quality.

Is there a way to convert my original sequence to my desired settings of DV, 29.97 without going through all these steps? The weird thing is that my original clips ARE DV, but because the project was originally set for HD, it thinks it's HD. Anyway, as you can see, I'm confused.

The only one I haven't tried (which I read in another forum) was to reinstall the final cut studio 2 package (final cut pro, motion, compressor etc). Another thing, if I do this, how do I do it? The site wasn't so clear in details on how to reinstall the whole FCS package.

Final Cut Pro :: Can't Open .mov File Into PC / What To Do?
I attempted to load a FCP .mov file to my PC laptop via flashdrive, which I've done a dozen times in the past. But this time PC won't recognize the file. Tried with another FD and a HD and neither worked either. I even have .mov files on my pc.
