Final Cut Pro :: Stabilizing Options - Motion4 Vs Steady Vs Boris Vs L&L?
With the stipulation that NO stabilizing software is a substitute for properly shot footage... Am about to test out demos for some of the major players in this field, which appear to be: Magic Bullet Steady from Red Giant / Boris Optical Stabilization / Lock & Load X from CoreMelt and of course Motion4, which I've already played with a little bit. (Am deliberately not including FCP's built-in SmoothCam option because of some built-in limitations, partly discussed in this related thread: [URL]
But would be interested to hear from anyone in this forum who's tried out one or more of the above, and has any insights as to their relative strengths and weaknesses (especially as regards speed, ease of use, versatility, and of course, ultimate image quality).

Final Cut / Motion :: Stabilizing With A Nodding Subject?
I have some interview video that has been shot poorly and has a lot of sway in the camera. Stabilize behavior has been helping with most the clips, but in tighter shots where the subject is nodding I am getting a product with a lot of vertical motion - as if the stabilizer was following his head. Part of this could be that the image is being enlarged by the stabilizer, and vertical movement is emphasized? I've tried adding a tracking point and playing around with most the functions in stabilizer. Information: iMac 24" Mac OS X (10.5.7) Final Cut Studio

Final Cut Pro :: Boris Title 3d After Export
looks squeezed and distorted - even to the point that it gets clipped at the top and bottom of the frames on the frames that have a bunch of text. All updated software, late 2007 MP, sequence is HDV 1080p, 23.98, no field dominance, and I am trying to export the sequence using compressor and the iPhone VGA preset. This sequence and workflow is the same as several other sequences that I have exported in the past, just different content - but otherwise the settings are all identical and even the titles that are being distorted are simply copies from other sequences that have worked in the past. This is really like one of those "all of a sudden" things. This is driving me nuts because everything else in the exported quicktime looks great (images, HDV video, imported Motion graphics), but just those Boris 3D titles are squeezing and distorting - and they've never done that before. I read in one thread about someone mentioning that the Boris titles are using square pixels -- true, but still this has never been an issue upon export in the past. Anyone have any ideas - I'm under a mild deadline and this is making me look like a moron - usually not that hard to do though, I admit. Information: Late 2007 Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Final Cut Pro :: Boris 3D Plugin Crashing
I'm using FCP5 and having a heck of a time. Once I put some titles in the project with Boris 3D, now the project won't even load up without crashing. In the past at least I could get the project opened, and then it would crash (over 50 times in the past 2 days!). Any solutions would be great. I already ready a past post about using Font Book to test the fonts in the system and removing any corrupted ones.. but when I validate them all, they come up with warnings, yet none were seriously damaged. I'm at a lose. I have deleted all render files thinking that might clear up any corruption in FCP, and still no luck. Final Cut Pro :: Boris Titles Seizing Up More And More
I'm rolling along in the production I'm woring in and my titles in Boris 3D decide to start seizing up. I can create and then when I go to Apply I have to click on it 20 times before I can get out. Just a thought, since I have to make alot of the same titles in several different sequences I have been copy and pasting the same title over and over. Could this be what's causing this freezing up. I was able to figure out how to scroll by using the behavior "scroll" but I could not figure out how to make it pause. Secondly, I wanted to be able to have the first phrase fade-in onto the screen and then begin rapid scrolling to the next phrase I want to pause on.Is this possible? Can anyone help?

Final Cut Pro :: Boris Text 3D Crashing - Can't Access Editor
This started as a missing Text editor. When I'd open the controls tab and try to open the Boris text editor, the pop-up window was nowhere to be found. I trashed my prefs but that didn't solve it. Now, whenever I try to open the text editor, all of FCP crashes. When I try to restart FCP, the start-up crashes and it never opens. Trashing the prefs DOES solve that issue and I'm able to get into FCP. But still can't access the Boris text editor. Information: Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Final Cut Pro :: Boris 3D Text Generator - Clunky Interface And Delay While Open Up
I've tried to use this tool but the clunky interface and 10 second delay while you open this up in it's own window drives me crazy. But I am trying again to use Boris 3D for subtitles. However, I just compared the text to FCP's text generator and Boris seems much softer and not nearly as crisp as FCP Text. The concern is that I have to render the FCP text - maybe this accounts for the difference? Boris does not give me a red line. So it's a dilemma - which to use? It's a pain to have to render subtitles - but Boris has that awful delay to deal with and just does not seem as crisp - any one any thoughts on this? Information: Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Final Cut Pro :: Best Options For External RAID Array?
I am looking into getting an external RAID array and was wondering what the users here think are some of the best options? I'm not a professional editor. But the content I have is priceless. It's over 25 years (started with a JVC VHS camera with a "portable" recorder and a small car batter) of video I've taken of my family and friends. Priceless, since it cannot be replaced. I probably need around 6-8 TB of storage. (I need to actually do the math, lots of tapes/lengths to count up). Most of what I have is VHS/8/Hi8 and MiniDV. All is being captured as NTSC DV, so around 15GB (rounding up) per hour. I have some HDV as well. But basically the data rates are all DV. (haven't decided what format I will archive the HDV yet) So, I think most of the RAID options out there will have more than enough bandwidth to support my video. I'm assuming I will wind up with an eSATA RAID option. I have looked at the CalDigit products, both the HDOne and HDElement. They seem more than capable for what I need. I've also looked at G-Technology products as well. I see that Apple offers mostly Promise and Rocstor RAID solutions on their on-line store. I'm looking for something that is: Reliable (most important) Quite (I don't want a hovercraft on my desk) Good support (which I hope I will never need) Information: Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.6.4) FCP 7

Final Cut Pro :: Using Canvas Options And Full Screen Playback
I'm looking for a way to change the canvas background to black. I can change the background of the video window to black, but what I'm trying to change is the area outside of the video. For example, if you go from the video fitting into your window to 50% and there is that gray area around your video....that's what I'm trying to change to black. The other thing I would like to do is be able to show a video in Final Cut full screen so if a client comes into the office we can show it without showing the timeline and all the tools. There is a way to do it in Avid so I was thinking there should be a way to do it in here as well. I know I can export it as a quicktime movie and play it full screen, but to save time and space I was hoping not to have to do that every time for proofing. Final Cut Pro :: Rookie Has Some Easy AVCHD Workflow Options
I just started with that whole video thing. Last week I got my Canon HF S10 (Full-HD). And so far I'm pretty happy.I hope you can give me a little kick-start. I use a iMac 24" with 2.4GhZ Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB RAM. I've successfully edited my first little test movie. But... some questions came to my mind:1. When I select "Log & Transfer", do I have to select a specific codec FCP is converting my AVCHD footage to? I went with defaults for now (AIC?). Should I select a Pro Res codec? 2. When editing, my video had these horizontal lines (I recorded in 50i). I applied a video filter to de-interlace the video. It looked way better. But do I have to apply this filter to every piece of my video, or can I apply that effect globally. Or are there video preferences somewhere, which I didnt find?

Final Cut Pro :: Mixing AVCHD+HDV Via ProRes -- Best Options?
the Project: I've been helping a friend shoot a no-budget doc, mostly on AVCHD (using the 1920x1080 24p mode) with my little Canon HF10. But I've also been given some B-roll shot on a Sony HDV cam (model HDR-HC7) at 1080i, which needs to be incorporated. Am about to start the actual ingesting into FCP7 (so far have just been backing-up the AVCHD files directly from the SDHC memory cards, leaving the original folder structure intact), and need to decide whether to transcode everything into ProRes LT, or go one step up to the 422 flavor. Reason I'm considering the latter (the ProRes 422) is that some of the material will require additional processing -- minor scaling adjustments, some color correcting, and/or some Motion OpticalFlow-ing or FCP SmoothCam-ing -- and was wondering if going to ProRes 422 would be worth the extra GBs in that regard, or should I just stick with the ProRes LT? Final Cut Pro :: Quicktime Movie Or Compressor Options In A System?

I was at the Apple Store this morning, working with someone on this issue at a one to one session and he seemed a little uncertain. He recommended Compressor but then wasn't clear on how it worked.According to him, I send the movie to compressor, drag the location (desktop in this case) twice, one for video one for Audio, to the upper box, then drag the desired setting (DVD Best Quality 90 Min) placing the Dolby audio on top of one location and the MPEG.2 (video) on the second location.

Final Cut Pro :: Clip Sort / Search Options For Doc Project?
Making doc clips more easily sortable and searchable in FCP7 -- something approximating Aperture's keyword-based options. This new thread is a more general companion to one I just posted to at [URL]. Which concerns FCP7's baffling inability to retain the Date Created info for AVCHD clips (info which displays fine in FCP's Log & Transfer window) when those same clips get ingested as ProRes422 media for editing. I'm about to start ingesting large amounts material (mostly AVCHD) for a documentary project. Unlike all the script-based work I've cut to date using FinalCut, this material does not have any obvious sequential Scene/Shot/Take designations on which I can base an easily sortable & searchable naming system. Instead, I'd planned to use an Aperture-like structure of some 20-30 custom keywords I would create and then assign to each clip, both during the Log & Transfer stage and later in the FCP browser itself. Combined with metadata for each clip -- basic stuff like the Date Created info -- I would then be able to call up at any time with just a few mouse clicks whatever group of clips matched whatever search criteria I specified ("every clip with ALL the attributes A, B, D, and H"; "any clip with B, C, or E"; or "every clip with E or F but NOT G, and only within a specified range of dates", etc.) And I would of course always have the option to save the results of each search as a kind of "Smart Bin" for later reference, as well as setting a default preference for having the clips within each search display in their chronological "Date Created" order. All to my mind just the kind of obvious stuff you'd want -- and expect -- to be able to do when wading through cutting a documentary with no prescribed timeline, in which pretty much all the material can in theory be cut together in pretty much any order. My initial impressions are that for a project like this, Final Cut Pro isn't very "Pro" at all. In fact, it -- well, you know the word -- five letters, with an "s" at each end. Still, I can't believe I'm the first person to need this kind sort-ability and search-ability -- based on metadata that's readily transferable, flexibly customizable and easily assignable -- for a non-linear documentary project such as this. I've begun trying to work out a system using FCP's current (i.e. very OS9-like) Find command and Browser columns structure, together with some custom naming configurations in the Log & Transfer window. But in my tests so far, it all just feels like trying to stir a big vat of sludge with a couple of plastic spoons -- especially compared to the kinds of keyword-based searches I can do in Aperture, which, while not perfect, are like a hot knife through butter compared to this. I'll hold off listing all the annoying inconsistencies and frustrating limitations I've been finding vis-a-vis Log & Transfer columns vs. Browser columns; info that transfers vs. info that doesn't; data fields which can be edited vs. those which can't; etc. For now -- before I commit to trying to make this all work through an endless series of ugly workarounds -- can anyone suggest a way (an article, a template, an example in a blog) which might at least enable SOME of the metadata / keywordesque-based sort & search flexibility, and organizational ease-of-use, which Final Cut 7 (I'll leave off the "Pro" part for now) appears to so desperately need?
