Final Cut Pro :: General Error - Sequence Won't Open

Been working on a project for a while and only just realised that i should have converted all my GoPro HD footage (h.246) to a more edit friendly format. Not knowing editing with the original format would cause serious glitches to my project, I worked away at it to almost completion. Then when i opened the project yesterday I dragged one of the clips i had been using into the timeline and it came up with "General Error" and a red screen in the viewer telling me to close and reopen the viewer. This unexpectedly closed the timeline aswell as the viewer pane and since then I haven't been able to open that project. When I try to it just comes up with the "General Error" message and then an "Out of Memory" message.

So I've done a bit of researching to figure out how I can salvage the project I've spent weeks on and of course i've found the reason (don't edit with h.246), but I still haven't found how I can retrieve my lost project.

Final Cut Pro :: General Error (Out Of Memory) On Sequence Export
Using FCP 7 on a 16G Mac Pro, ATI Radeon GFX Card, RAID 0. I have created and exported to Quicktime, 3 separate 1280 x 720, Linear PCM, Colour Profiled HD (1-1-1) clips, using a sequence set to 1280 x 720 and a ProRes422 compressor.
Clip 1 108.2MB
Clip 2 133.2MB
Clip 3 180.2MB

Now, I'm trying to block them altogether on ONE to timeline for export to DVD. Clips 1 and 3 sit nicely on another 1280 x 720 sequence but when adding Clip 2, a 'General Error'/'Out Of Memory' warning is displayed. Although all 3 clips were made using the same compressor and sequence setting, why can I not drop all 3 into a new project? FCP reboot tried with no positive results. I've checked my settings.

Final Cut Pro :: General Error And Out Of Memory Error - Affecting Multiple Projects?
I am running Final Cut Pro 6 on my 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 iMac, with 1.25 GB RAM. OS X 10.4.11.

I have had this setup for more than a year and used it without any problems.

I have two projects stored on an external LaCie firewire drive with more than 140GB disk space remaining. As of this morning, I cannot work on either of them: both are throwing the "General Error" message, and one of them is also telling me it's "Out of Memory". On project #1, the "Out of Memory" occurs whenever I try to open a clip in the viewer, following a "General Error" message. On project #2, the "General Error" message occurs when I try to open the project; it gets halfway through the process and then throws the error, leaving me unable to open the timeline.

Both projects are short, less than 3 minutes long, and neither project contains any CMYK or grayscale graphics. Project #2 does have a short Motion sequence.

Final Cut Pro :: General Error 41 ?
Error 41 generally means trying to open a project with a newer version of fcp than the on it was created with - I think:

All I did was to do a fresh install off the fcp I was using, and I did a general software update (quicktime, security etc...) So why the 41 error?

Final Cut Pro :: How To Recover From General Error 41
This is not another one of those "what is general error 41 threads". Quick story: I have Final Cut Express(3.5.1) on an iMac and had originally created a project on that computer (all media & project files are on external hard drives). I then opened up the project on a Mac Pro with Final Cut Pro (not sure the version). I'm not 100% positive but I'm pretty sure that i didn't save it but just viewed it in Final Cut Pro. I checked the project file and it still says "Final Cut Express Document". I am now getting general error 41 on the iMac with Final Cut Express when I try and open it. It is a very large project (over 20 minutes with thousands of cuts) and my question is if this is the problem is there any way of recovering it so I can open it in Final Express again?

Final Cut Pro :: General Error On Importing Clip
I'm having an issue where I downloaded a clip that plays beautifully in my Quicktime player and also plays in preview. However, when I bring it into my Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 (recently updated in software update), it goes in but when I try to double click it or bring it into a sequence, it all of a sudden says "General Error"

I've tried re-exporting it in Quicktime to a .mov because currently it is a .mp4. Once I got it to a .mov, it again played beautifully in Quicktime but got an error in Final Cut. I even tried trashing Final Cut's preferences, restarting, doing a system software update, etc. I even tried re-downloading the clip and I just keep getting General Error. I have FCP 7.0.3 and an Imac 2.93 GHz and I'm running Mac version 10.5.8.

Final Cut Pro :: Out Of Memory / General Error On Export
I'm trying to export a simple timeline from FCP but keep getting Final Cut Pro Error: 'out of memory'/'general error'. Exporting 5 sec timeline (yes, just a short trailer) via Quicktime conversion H264 at 1080. Strangely, if I export exactly same timeline at 720 its fine. Original media ProRes422 1080. Have exported at 1080 before ok. No nested files involved; re-connected all media; no JPEGs involved; plenty of memory (all of which I have heard can be issues).

Final Cut Pro :: General Error (41) On Opening Project
I'm having a slight issue with my project every-time I go to open it FCP opens but, shows me this blunt message, 'General Error (41).' Prior to this I completed a 4 minute short, sent it to Compressor, decided to select the 1080i-50 option on settings to match my 1080i HD T.V. (Idea was to watch it via my hard drive like AVI files). and submitted it. I've used compressor on & off so I'm not massively experienced, but after I hit that submit button I realized I might have bit of more than I could chew. I played it back after processing but it wasn't the full movie, just a snippet at the end. So I deleted it as I believe FCP couldn't handle it. Now I get that error message. FCP 5.1

I am running Final Cut Pro 7 on a MacBook with a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. I have used FCP to edit before using video from a camera that used mini DV tapes and that worked fine. I recently got the Flip Ultra HD, which records straight to MP4 with the following format: 1280x720, 30 FPS, H.264 video compression. I imported the files on my computer and then imported them into FCP. When I try to play them in the viewer I get a window that says: General Error. Then another window that says: out of memory. I have tried restarting both the computer and the program.

Final Cut Pro :: Get General Error On Making Freeze Frame
So I started having some major problems with crashing, and trashing prefs or running utilities did nothing. I ended up exporting the XML from the final sequence, and importing it into a clean project, which stopped the crashes, but now when I try and make a Freeze Frame I get a General Error (8), and when I attempt to export my sequence it renders for a bit and then has a General Error. I have already tried trashing my preferences, and that did not help. I have run utilities, Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro, to no avail. And I have just trashed my render files, and am re-rendering (though I already had to do this yesterday when I imported the XML as a new sequence.

Final Cut Pro :: Multi Clips View - General Error (Out Of Memory)
The quick story is my daughter got married, four cameras, a new top of the line iMac just for this purpose and FCP7 to edit. I thought compression was bad (lossey) so am working with .AVI files at 25 to 45 GB per file. I am trying the multi clip (4 views) in the viewer, but as soon as I do, I get the above error. I have read some posts here and checked the following: system settings > memory & cache > application, is maxed out at 100% (2560MB) (why I can't go to 8gig I don't know), cut up the files into +/- 5 minute sub clips bunching 4 of those (one from each camera) into a multiclip and then finally moved source files off the system disk to ext HDD.

Applications :: Cannot Save Or Render In Final Cut General Error Message With No Number
I just opened a FC project in 6.0 from an XML file for the first time. The project originally came from 6.0.6 and I was happy to see that this kind of reversion was actually possible. Unfortunatly after doing a little work I started getting "general error" messages whenever I tried to save the project or render any transitions.

If I remeber correctly, I opened the XML and was asked to save a new project. I saved the project and started working. I dont remeber if any saves or rendering had worked in the new project before I got the error messages. Maybe none of them worked, I am not sure.

Final Cut Pro :: Media Manager Sequence Error When Trying To Archive Video
When we are done with a project we like to use media manager to consolidate only the used video (with handles) to save space. This has never posed a problem until lately. On about five of the last projects when the media manager begins reconnecting media we get the following error: "Sequence Error: Unable to add clip to sequence. Possible media limits problem in clip or sequence". The only option is to abort so a new sequence is never created. Also, it will not tell me which clip caused the error.

I tried moving everything into a new sequence and got the same error. Then I tried it without handles, then I tried it without deleting the unused media. I have also tried the projects on other computers (All 10.6.4, all FCP 7.02) All had the same error. The only other reference to this error I can find deals with a multicam edit. None of these projects have any multicam edits. I have tried to think if we are doing anything differently lately and the only thing i can come up with is using more of Tiffen's DFX filters.

Final Cut Pro :: Codec Not Found Error When Trying To Render/export Layered Sequence?
I have a sequence that I never had problems with in the past but as of yesterday when I open the project and try to render or export. I get the infamous dialogue box saying, "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."

I've narrowed it down to only being a problem wherever I have two particular types of media clips layered one on top of the other. In this case it is occurring wherever I have an Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) clip layered with an Animation codec clip containing a graphical bug that was created in After Effects and exported as a Quicktime Movie with RGB+Alpha. Because of the Alpha channel in the bug clip, it is automatically given the Animation codec upon export from After Effects to retain and preserve the transparency needed. I've also narrowed it down to only occurring when all this is combined on a sequence with its compressor set to standard ProRes 422 or ProRes HQ. If I set it to any other codec, such as any DV/DVC Pro or MPEG IMX codec then I can render and export again.

And if anyone else reading this comes across this this same type of problem themselves, then I suggest what I just got to work: Duplicate your sequence, then delete the clips from the new sequence and nest the original sequence into it.

Final Cut / Soundtrack Pro :: Unable To Open Projects / Tried To Send A Sequence For Audio Mix-down
Version of Soundtrack Pro: 3.0.1

Problem: The problem started yesterday when I tried to send a sequence from Final Cut Pro to Soundtrack Pro for audio mix-down when the error message appeared (see attached).

Troubleshooting: I tried to open the project directly from Soundtrack Pro, no good, same error message. I then removed my Preferences, no good, still the same error message. Opened my project from one of the other edit systems in the building and found that it works just fine. So that tells me that the problem is with my Mac Pro. I've tried removing Soundtrack Pro and reinstalled it, no luck. Final Cut Pro :: Motion 4 Won't Open Projects?
This involves the latest Final Cut Studio, FCP 7 and Motion 4. I'm unable to open projects in either one of them. Here's what happens: Go and click open an existing FCP 7 project. FCP 7 opens, fills the screen with its display window, showing all items in the project. Then, at the time when it would normally display a message saying something like "Preparing video for viewing," the program pops the spinning colored beachball and hangs. It does this every time. HOWEVER, if I open the FCP 7 program on its own with a virgin, unsaved timeline project screen, it does not hang. I can import clips and edit in a routine manner. But once the project is saved and I try to open it the next day, I get the hang described above. I can't open any of my previous FCP files.

Motion 4 does a similar thing when I attempt to click it open on its own. It can't progress past displaying its "Motion 4" logo when it pops the spinning beachball. Oddly, if I click open an existing Motion 4 file, it opens and functions normally.

Final Cut Pro :: Won't Open With Drive Attached
A strange problem happened the last couple days where I'd be happily working along in my FCP, then quit out to shut down for the night. Suddenly the next day, I go to open FCP and it just bounces and doesn't open, and I need to force quit. So I do the normal stuff of disk utility and trashing preferences, and it seems to work fine again. Then the next time I quit out and go to open, same thing, doesn't open. I have to trash preferences again. This is not something I want to be doing forever so I tried to figure out the issue. I thought maybe it was some updates I did recently, or perhaps those pesky plugins that always cause problems. Again, things seemed to be working when I took the plugins away, but alas, it would not open after quitting once more. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling FCP, and it still didn't open! That's when I noticed a USB drive I had attached to my computer only in the last couple of days. It had some sound fx on it I wanted to use in my project. I ejected it. Boom, FCP opens. Time and time again it opens fine and healthy when this drive isn't attached. I have NO IDEA why that is. Can anyone tell me? This seems so strange because the other FCS apps opened fine when it was attached, just not FCP. And FCP works fine when it's already open and the drive is attached. I just want to understand this so I don't make the same mistake again.
