Applications :: GarageBand - Can't Use The Software On The Instrument?

Jan 20, 2010

I have recently bought a Roland dr 670 drum machine and also a m-audio UNO midi plug thingy. I was hoping to use the drum machine and record stuff off it, but I can't get it to do anything in GarageBand. Also I read somewhere that if you connect something by midi you can't use the software on the instrument and only the software instruments in GarageBand! If so, why is there stuff like the quantisizing feature on the drum machine when you record if you can't even using it in GarageBand

OS X :: GarageBand Instrument Library Completely Missing

Aug 5, 2009

A week ago I had to format my HD and reinstall Leopard last week. When I restored from my external HD afterward, I just clicked and dragged back the files and folders that I wanted instead of completely restoring the drive. I put Garageband back in my Apps folder. It didn't work when I opened it (something about an instrument library being invalid, what ever.). So I reinstalled iLife 09 from the disc, and now Garageband opens properly.

The problem is that there are no (0) instruments in the library now, nor any loops. I know that normally there's an update available from Software Update that's about 1.1gb and includes all of the instruments and loops, but that update isn't appearing in the list. Anyone know what I can do? If someone can point me to a download/Rapidshare/torrent/Anything of that update, or even a functional instrument library?

Software :: Launching Garageband - Instrument Library Invalid

Jan 27, 2006

I was having some trouble launching garageband as I kept getting a message saying my instrument library is invalid and that GarageBand expects a valid instrument library folder in /library/applications support/garageband. it goes on to say please choose a valid insutrument library folder or quit and re-install garageband. I recently got my ilife cd sent to me, however ive tried to reinstall a few times but I keep getting the same error message. It looks like all my folders are where they should be but it doesn't look like there is anything in the folders. After Instrument library I have 2 folders called plug-in and track settings. In track settings, there are 3 folders called master, real, and software, but nothing is in any of these folders as far as I know.

OS X :: Is Any Interface Ok To Connect A Midi Instrument

Mar 12, 2009

I just realized that there's a way I could hook up my midi controller board (piano with no sounds...actually it's a keytar!)), to the garageband organ simulator's!! But all I have for an interface is the older model Tascam us122. And the power source for that is when the usb connection is plugged in. But when i've recently tried to plug that into my Mac, the Interface won't turn on, or the Mac doesn't even recognize that something was plugged in. I am a new Mac owner, from a PC. So is this normal...should I have to search to find where the source is to be turned on??? Or do you know if Tascam is even compatible with Mac

Applications :: GarageBand 08 Recording?

May 31, 2010

I have a couple questions regarding GarageBand 08 and recording with it.

1) Is it possible to connect a vocal mic to GarageBand, put an effect on that, and have a live output of the signal coming from the mic with the effect on it without having to record the audio first?

2) I have a Yamaha keyboard that has a MIDI and 1/4" jack output on. I am interested in connecting the keyboard to my Mac for use in recording. Would it be possible to run the audio signal from the 1/4" jack to the 1/8" jack on my Mac and record the audio in GarageBand and be able to apply effects to that track (i.e. synthesizers)?

Applications :: GarageBand - Audio Not Getting Down To Mixer

Jan 25, 2007

I'm having trouble getting sound out of Garageband - I've boiled it down to simply trying to play simple Apple loops or use musical typing to play software instruments. Sound is working properly in all other applications, including iTunes, Peak and Final Cut Pro. Audio input/output is set to Built-In in both GB preferences and Audio-Midi preferences. The MIDI is recording (ie, I can see a track appear when I play, and I see levels in the track) but for some reason the audio is not getting down to the mixer below (volume is up all the way on individual track and bottom right main, mute is off). I'm running OS 10.4.8 with Garageband 3.0.2.

I can't figure out how to use a new microphone with garageband. It plugs into the line-in part on my gf's MBP (the one next to the headphone port, right?), and i choose "Line-In" from the sound preference pane... but it's still using the internal mic when recording on garageband. I also remember trying to record with my guitar plugged into the comp, and that didn't work either.

Applications :: GarageBand 08 - Finding Instruments?

Feb 19, 2009

I switched to a mac almost a year ago. About a month after purchasing my macbook, i installed this application, and then i didn't want it anymore. The app didn't uninstall properly and it crippled the mac (in my rookie mind). I then made another stupid decision of reinstalling leopard on the macbook. Everything installed correctly except garageband 08. It wasn't there, since i never used it, i just forgot about it later until i got a copy from a friend who recently purchased an imac. I just copied the app onto a flash drive and put it on the macbook. The app worked, except there wasn't any instruments, loops, etc. Now i want to use grageband and i was wondering how i can get those back. Are they on one of the install dvd's? Do i copy folders from my friends mac to mine?, if so which ones and where?

Applications :: Siblelius Midi And Garageband

Mar 9, 2010

Have MacBook Pro, running on OSx and on 10.4.8. Using Sibelius 3. I am the only music teacher in my school so do not have the luxury of an accompaninist. I thought all my problems were solved when I discovered the wonderful real sounding steinway piano in garageband. So I input my piano score note for note into sibelius, then save it as a midi. Before I do it I input all my tempo edits such as rits, pauses and accelerandos and so on. I then drag my new midi into garageband and yes it plays beautifully only problem is it doesn't play any of my tempo instructions. Yes I have checked that they're playing back correctly in sibelius before I saved as midi. Pleas help me as I have practical exams for my students coming up very quickly and it is causing me severe stress

Applications :: Learning Guitar On GarageBand?

Jul 25, 2010

I admit I have never really touched a real guitar in my life (obviously a Rock Band guitar does not count). But since I just got my new 27" iMac, I came to the realization that learning guitar with GarageBand might actually be pretty interesting.

So, what is the minimum buying requirements in order to start learning guitar when you are starting with nothing (other than GarageBand itself, of course).

Here is what I think I need at a minimum, but I want to make sure:
Acoustic Electric OR Electric guitar. A regular acoustic guitar won't work because it does not have a line output (is that correct?).

I have seen some acoustic electric guitars on eBay for less than $100. What do I need to make sure the Guitar comes with before buying? [By the way, I have my eye on one acoustic electric guitar that comes with an Active Pickup ... is active pickup necessary?]
1/4" to 1/8" adapater

Here are some extras that might be nice for better tone, but are not required:
USB or Firewire Audio Interface. I think I have seen I can get one of these for $50-$100
A microphone to connect to the audio interface
An amplifier

I was thinking of starting with the minimum requirements (assuming what I listed is the minimum) and if I decide I enjoy this, go for the extras I listed.

Do I have this all correct?
